When it comes to landing your dream job, salary negotiation should be high on the list of things you want to do to make sure you get paid what you deserve.
As with most things in life, if you don’t ask, you’ll never receive, so if you want the salary you deserve during this job offer process, follow these three steps to successfully negotiate your salary and get the pay package that works best for you.
Do your research
Know the market rate for your position and research salaries in your region. If you’re not sure how much you should be earning, try using Glassdoor’s 25% rule. To use the rule, divide your annual salary by four and then multiply that number by 0.25. This will give you the lowest number an employer should offer you. You can also see what other people with similar experiences are making at different companies by checking out sites like Payscale or LinkedIn.
Know your value
The next step in negotiating salary during a job offer is knowing your value. You don’t have to be the best at what you do, but you should know the average for your skillset and whether or not your work experience is more valuable than someone else’s. In addition, be confident with your skills, knowledge, and experience. It’s okay if you’re not sure about something, but don’t let that make you doubt yourself.
Be prepared to compromise
The point of negotiating your salary is not to try and get the best deal possible. The point is to find a compromise that will work for both parties involved in the job offer. Remember, you want them as much as they want you so it’s important that both sides are satisfied with the end result.
