A Peek into Chadwick Boseman's Immense Devotion to Acting: Ryan Coogler
- Apr 10, 2025
"Sinners" director, Ryan Coogler, recently joined an episode of “The Breakfast Club,” where he lauded the late Chadwick Boseman's exceptional devotion to his profession. Coogler guided Boseman on the set of Marvel’s mega-hit “Black Panther.” The duo had started working on the sequel before Boseman passed away from colon cancer in August 2020 at just 43 years old.
According to Coogler, "Among all my actors, Chad's passing hit Michael B. Jordan the hardest. Though he seemed our equal in age, Chad was actually quite a bit older than us. Raised in the South, he was a fully matured, classic gentleman. Compared to him, Mike and I felt like youngsters when we worked with him on set."
Coogler attested to how Boseman impacted his life, stating, "Chad was a transformative figure. His approach to teaching was so unassuming that you wouldn’t realize you were learning. He led by example, teaching Mike and me patience. Chad moved at an unhurried pace, always punctual, and utterly dependable. In fact, I often found myself asking, 'What would Chad have done in this Sinners role?' And that's because Chad was so engrossed in the character he was playing, he never broke action."

Boseman's commitment saw him adopting T’Challa’s accent for "Black Panther” throughout the entirety of the filming, Coogler highlighted. He said, "Disney executives visited us on the set during the second week. They heard Chad speaking in T’Challa's accent and were taken aback. I reassured them. Chad was simply 'in character' and would remain so until we wrapped."
Boseman’s sheer dedication enabled Michael B. Jordan, who portrayed the antagonist Erik Killmonger in “Black Panther,” to fully engage in the dual characters of the film "Sinners."
The public will get to watch "Sinners," which debuts in theaters on April 18 from Warner Bros. Coogler's full discussion on Chadwick Boseman can be viewed on “The Breakfast Club.”
